Is the Paleo Diet a Myth? Cavemen Likely Ate a Plant-Based Diet
New research challenges the idea that our Paleolithic ancestors ate a heavily meat-based "paleo" diet. Evidence from ancient remains indicates hunter-gatherer groups likely got up to 80% of their calories from plant sources like grains, tubers, acorns, etc.
While meat was consumed, the notion of hunter-gatherers primarily subsisting on animal proteins is contradicted by findings of substantial plant food consumption and tools for processing plants.
The origins of cooking, not just increased meat-eating, may have been a key dietary shift allowing humans to extract more energy from food to fuel brain growth.
Modern populations like the Tsimane who still forage exhibit low rates of diseases like obesity and heart disease when eating a traditional diet high in plants, in contrast to those consuming more processed Western foods.
